“There used to be a line about Los Angeles that everyone was either a screenwriter or an actor,” says Scotti Sitz, owner of L.A. home decor shop Garde. “I think in some respects, you could start to make the case that everyone here is now an interior designer.” Indeed, the city’s design scene has boomed, with new shops and showrooms sprouting up every month. What’s most exciting about this design renaissance, though, is the range of visions and styles represented around the city—due in part, perhaps, to the constant flow of new residents from around the country and world. “The L.A. design scene is equally embracing of the primitive and the cutting-edge, the refined with the unrefined,” says Adam Blackman of Blackman Cruz, on Highland Avenue. The proof is in these 14 shops and showrooms.

A shop by the design firm of the same name, Consort offers the offbeat modern-yet-glam style that has earned designers Mat Sanders and Brandon Quattrone a star-studded client list to a broader audience. In the cheerful, creatively curated space, luxe furnishings and fine art share space with funky accessories and plenty of color. 6918 Melrose Avenue, consort-design.com.
This may be the only place in L.A. where one will find a ten-foot buffet with a medieval marquetry scene alongside a set of Mies van der Rohe chairs. “Cosmopolitan and provocative, slightly macabre and eccentric” is how the owners, Adam Blackman and David Cruz, describe their aesthetic. A design destination since the early ’90s, the showroom includes antiques and oddities as well as pieces from the owners’ line, Blackman Cruz Workshop. 836 North Highland Avenue, blackmancruz.com.
